Pilates focused on deep core muscles of the spine, pelvis, and abdominals.
Precision of movements coordinated with breath helps to enhance overall body awareness, allowing individuals to understand how their bodies move and function. This can lead to better movement patterns and overall physical efficiency.
Poor posture can cause a range of health issues, including back pain, headaches and fatigue. Our Pilates classes focus on alignment and core strength to help you stand taller and feel better. Pilates is a well-rounded exercise modality that conditions the entire body... it elongates and strengthens muscles, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. As we continue to age, it is important to balance strength and flexibility, and move through full range of motions of the body to help prevent injuries and support overall wellness. This is particularly beneficial for older adults, reducing the risk of falls and improving overall stability.
In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to take time to relax and unwind. Our Pilates classes incorporate breathing techniques and mindful movement to help you feel calm and centered. The focus on coordinating breath and mindfulness during Pilates exercises can improve mental focus and reduce stress. The connection between mind and body is a core principle in Pilates, promoting overall mental well-being.

"Contrology" as Pilates called his method, is the practice of 50 exercises.
Each exercise flows from the "five essentials": breath, cervical alignment, rib and scapular stabilization, pelvic mobility, and utilization of the transverse abdominus. Each exercise is typically repeated three to five times. Repetition supports mind-body connection, muscle memory and overall strengthening.
Pilates is easily adaptable for all ages, all abilities. Even for those with limited mobility. Pilates can include the use of props such as chairs, stretch bands, air-flled balls, blacks and more so make movements accessible for everyone.
Joseph Pilates was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, in 1883.
Pilates grew up with a variety of health problems, including asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever.
His father was a prize-winning gymnast, his mother a naturopath, so despite his physical challenges, Pilates was determined to become strong and healthy. He began studying various forms of exercise and movement to improve his health including the principles of yoga, Zen Buddhism, and ancient Greek and Roman exercise systems.
Pilates believed that the key to good health and physical fitness was the proper alignment and control of the body’s core musculature. He developed a system of exercises that focused on strengthening and toning the muscles of the abdomen, back, and hips.
Pilates emigrated to the United States in 1912 and worked as a circus performer and professional boxer. During World War I, Pilates worked as a nurse and began to develop his method of exercise, which he called “Contrology.”
Contrology, he believed would benefit people of all ages and fitness levels.
in 1926 Pilates opened a studio in New York City sharing an address with New York City Ballet, where he taught his method to a variety of clients, including dancers, athletes, and celebrities.
The effectiveness of Pilates method quickly gained popularity as a way of injury prevention for professional athletes as well as form of rehabilitation following an injury or surgery.
Pilates has been endorsed by many health professionals, including physical therapists and doctors, as a safe and effective form of exercise for all ages and abilities.
